A Few Days in Winston-Salem
I arrived at the Historic Brookstown Inn in Winston-Salem on Friday morning to write and do some book research.
I wrote for a bit, conducted a couple of interviews, and held a puppy.
Yesterday, I missed a SDW Co-Writing Session. Then I apologized (with a typo, of course). Then I led a SDW Four-Hour Retreat with Lauren Winner. I love our Four-Hour Retreats, by the way. It’s always a nourishing time for the participants (and the leaders!).
Then I drove to Charlotte and back to watch my son play basketball. His team played a team from California that’s ranked number four in the nation. It was so fun to see the game in person. Brady got some good minutes and played pretty well. I’m so proud of him for continuing to put in the work and do what he needs to do to accomplish his longterm goal to play basketball at the college level. And I’m so thankful for his prep school and all it offers him as a young man, student, and athlete. He is flourishing in all areas right now, and I’m just so so grateful.
I’m stating the obvious, but North Carolina high school basketball is way better than Alabama high school basketball.
Also. I finally I did the thing I’ve been avoiding and calculated my 2022 income and expenses and discovered I earned more money in 2022 than I’ve earned since I worked part-time for my former church as the administrator almost 20 years ago. My expenses were greater than my income due to several BIG THINGS I paid for last year—SDW website overhaul, legal fees to trademark Spiritual Direction for Writers and Parenting with Art, etc. My main financial goal for 2023 is to not pay for any BIG THINGS. We’ll see if that works out.
It’s rainy and cold here today. I plan to put myself in the way of good books, good art, and a good sermon.
I hope you can do the same. If you want to.
And here are some photos from the Historic Brookstown Inn…
