Daily Nourishment for April 9, 2024: When Laughter is a Prayer with Kaveh Akbar

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 60 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 12 minutes

When we want to connect with God, laughter might help.

Prompt.

Write about something that doesn’t seem like prayer but is (or might be?) for seven minutes.

Take notes with bullet point phrases or write real sentences. Journal or pray or begin a new essay or a story or a letter to a friend.

Practice.

“‘How Prayer Works’ is anything but frivolous. It is a joyful response to the serious question of how to hold things together: with practice, with companionship, with repetition, with openness to the world, with spontaneity, laughter and freedom…”

Pádraig ÓTuama, Poetry Unbound (book)

Notice how you try to hold things together in the coming hours and days. Can Kaveh Akbar and “How Prayer Works” be your guides as you move toward more “openness to the world, with spontaneity, laughter, and freedom”?
