Daily Nourishment for October 5, 2024: It Seems Like They're Almost Rhyming with Guidance from NASA Satellite Images

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 40 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 15 minutes

“It's land. It's ocean. The patterns that are on it are so symmetrical — it seems like they're almost rhyming.” - Lawrence Friedl

Pause.

Take a few quiet minutes to view the NASA satellite image below.

Phytoplankton Bloom, Baltic Sea, 2005 Massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the first link in nearly all ocean food chains. Blooms of phytoplankton, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters. Prompt.

Use the photo above or a different photo from this PDF of NASA Earth as Art book of satellite images and begin making three lists:

  1. Ten things you see in the photo

  2. Five ideas/thoughts that come to mind that may or may not be related to the photo

  3. Five people who might appreciate seeing this photo

Practice.

Set a timer for seven minutes and take notes in response to the questions below.

  1. What’s everything you know about this photo?

  2. What are three things you don’t know about this photo?

  3. If this photo were framed, where should it hang? Which real or fictional house? Which real or fictional building? Why?

If you like, begin writing a new work of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, or a letter to a friend using your notes.
