Daily Nourishment for November 12, 2024: Layers of Fragments and Stories and Dates with Guideance from Edmund de Waal

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 40 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 15 minutes

You take an object from your pocket
and put it down in front of you and you start.
You begin to tell a story.

-Edmund de Waal

Pause.

Take six deep breaths with a six-count inhale and a six-count exhale while looking at some of the art made by Edmund de Waal.

Practice.

Find an object nearby to use as your source material/inspiration. Set a timer for seven minutes then take notes and/or draw in response to your object to capture fragments, stories, dates, and other pertinent information about your object.

Some questions to consider while doing this exercise:

Where did this object come from?

How old is it?

What people, places, things, and ideas are associated with it?

Who and what can you research to find more stories that are tangentially related to this object or anything that’s come to mind during this exercise?

In the coming days and weeks, use your notes, drawings, and research ideas to begin writing a new story, poem, essay, or letter to a friend.
