Daily Nourishment for May 27, 2024: Your Face Remembered

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 45 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 12 minutes

“I cannot escape the country of my mind.”

Pause.

Take six deep breaths with a six-count inhale and a six-count exhale while looking at the illustration below of that “depicts people paying tribute at the Tomb of the Civil War Unknowns during the first official Decoration Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in May 1868. (Illustration by C.M. Thomas from Harper’s Weekly, June 20, 1868)”

Practice.

Set a timer for seven minutes and write in response to the image and poem above and the questions and statements below.

Write a few lines of prose or poetry about Memorial Day, death, remembering, and not being able to remember.

Now think a bit about how this day, war, death, and remembering intersects with your creative work and take notes.

How can knowing death’s reality, war, loss, and grief be motivation to write or motivation to skip writing?

What are some specific ways you can remember those who are honored on this day?
