“I’ll cradle my cup of water and sip it like wine” - Roxane Beth Johnson

Pause.

Take six deep breaths with a six-count inhale and a six-count exhale. Then look at “The Silence” by Carel Weight for a few minutes.

Prompt.

In “The Silence,” Carel Weight “wished to convey his belief that although people come together in rituals, their experience is essentially solitary. To emphasise this, the three figures never met and were painted separately.”

Practice.

  1. Set a timer for five minutes and have five minutes of silence and stillness.

  2. Write three sentences about your five minutes of silence.

  3. Write three sentences of fiction about a character’s experience of a brief period of silence.

  4. Write three more sentences about someone’s silence. These three sentences can be fiction, nonfiction, memoir, a prose poem, a letter to a friend, anything.
