Daily Nourishment for February 23, 2024: Hallie Waugh on Scent, Memory, Paying Attention, and More

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 30 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 10-15 minutes

“Life must be aromatic. There must be scent, somehow there must be some.” — Gwendolyn Brooks

Pause.

When you get a chance, step outside. Breathe in deeply through your nose for five breaths. What do you smell? What does that scent tell you about the world around you?

Prompt.

Set a timer for five minutes and write a list of scents that have formed you, starting with your childhood. Choose one of the scents and flesh it out into a paragraph or longer piece for five more minutes.

Practice.

Immerse yourself in an aroma that is meaningful to you this week. Maybe it’s the scent of fresh-baked bread, your favorite perfume, or the smell of clean laundry.

Return to your list of scents from the prompt above. Write vignettes for as many scents as you’d like, or use this list for future writing prompts and ideas.
