Daily Nourishment for July 10, 2024: Tension in Art and Story with Guidance from Words by Jamie Quatro and Art by Matt Kleberg (Part 2)

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 40 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 15 minutes

“My paintings are increasingly concerned with the tension between doubt and anticipation. When I first encountered Jamie’s writing, it was the not-knowing that resonated with me, the blurred boundaries between the sacred and profane, scandal and sacrament. Her stories are full of yearning and short on answers—something I hope my work conveys as well.” - Matt Kleberg

Practice.

Set a timer for 10 minutes and journal or take notes in response to the art and video above and/or the items below.

  1. In one of the short videos above Kleberg talks a bit about having an idea then iterating and reiterating it to allow a piece to become what it’s going to become.

How do your ideas unfold over time?

  2. Kleberg also talks about how he receives inspiration for his paintings: “Some of the inspiration comes from outside the studio and some of it is already swirling around inside the studio. The stuff that’s swirling inside the studio probably came from outside awhile back but it’s just kind of ricocheting around in here.”

Where does your inspiration come from? Make a list of five people, places, or things. Then give some thought to how those different sources of inspiration feed each other. How the ideas from each source combine and swirl and ricochet during your creative process.

  3. Here’s another quote from Kleberg: “I’m taking one loose motif idea and playing with all of these possibilities within that framework and hoping that something eventually clicks into place.”

How do you know when something clicks into place? What types of things do you do to move your work toward clicking into place?
