Daily Nourishment for September 10, 2024: We Walk Sightless Among Miracles with Guidance from Emily Hartford

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 45 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 15 minutes

“Days pass, and years vanish, and we walk sightless among miracles.”  - Dani Shapiro

Pause.

Step outside (even if it’s raining!), close your eyes, and take six deep breaths, each one slower than the one before.  When you open your eyes, look around you and see what in nature catches your attention.

Prompt.

Read “Praying” by Mary Oliver here or listen to “Praying” by Mary Oliver here.

Practice.

Return to what caught your attention outside, picking it up or finding a comfortable place where you can observe it up close.

Set a timer for seven minutes.  Examine it closely - look from angles you haven’t seen before.  Explore the colors, textures, smells.  What are you being invited to notice?

When your timer ends, find some paper (or digital means of writing) and use three minutes taking notes on your experience.

Sketch or paint the nature you observed today - calling to mind the details and colors.  Don’t strive for accurate representation, rather creating a piece of art that calls you home to those moments of Holy Attention.

Growing up in rural Illinois, Emily began creating when she was in junior high school, sharing joyful space with women from her community in their crafting, knitting and quilting groups. These formative skills and relationships inspire Emily’s creations today.
